What Is Zepbound®?
Zepbound® is the brand-name version of tirzepatide manufactured by Eli Lilly, FDA-approved in 2023 for chronic weight management. In the SURMOUNT-1 clinical trial, patients on the 15mg maintenance dose lost an average of 20.9% of body weight over 72 weeks, the highest result of any FDA-approved weight loss medication currently available.
Tirzepatide is a dual agonist that activates both GLP-1 and GIP receptors. The two-pathway mechanism produces stronger appetite suppression and greater fat metabolism effects than single-agonist GLP-1 medications like semaglutide. The SURMOUNT-5 trial directly compared tirzepatide and semaglutide, confirming greater relative weight loss with tirzepatide at comparable doses.

Same active ingredient (tirzepatide), different FDA indications. Mounjaro® is approved for type 2 diabetes management. Zepbound® is approved for chronic weight management and obstructive sleep apnea. Both are manufactured by Eli Lilly at the same dose range (2.5mg to 15mg weekly). Your provider will recommend the appropriate formulation based on your diagnosis and goals.
Different molecules and mechanisms. Tirzepatide (Zepbound®) activates both GLP-1 and GIP receptors and produces ~20.9% average weight loss at 15mg.
