No. Mounjaro® is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes management, not for weight loss. Zepbound® is the same molecule (tirzepatide) at the same dose range, FDA-approved for chronic weight management. Significant weight loss is a documented effect of Mounjaro® and it is sometimes prescribed off-label for diabetic patients who need both glucose control and weight management.
Different molecules. Mounjaro® contains tirzepatide, a dual GLP-1 + GIP receptor agonist. Ozempic® contains semaglutide, a GLP-1-only agonist. The dual mechanism of tirzepatide produces greater A1c reduction and greater average weight loss than semaglutide in head-to-head SURPASS-2 trial data. Both are FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes management.
Same molecule, different FDA indications. If you have type 2 diabetes, Mounjaro® is the FDA-approved option and most commonly covered by insurance. Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) and other GLP-1 medications may cause thyroid C-cell tumors. Do not use if you have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
