Will TRT make me feel “like I’m on steroids”?

No. Medically supervised TRT aims to restore testosterone to the upper-normal physiological range, not above it. The goal is to bring levels to where a healthy 30-year-old would naturally be, not to produce the supraphysiological levels associated with anabolic steroid use. Most patients describe the effect as feeling normal again, not as a drug effect. The absence of the previous symptoms is what they notice, not a stimulant or enhancement effect.

My testosterone is “borderline low.” Will I still see benefits?

Potentially, but the benefit is harder to predict. Men in the 300 to 450 ng/dL range with significant symptoms often see meaningful improvement. Men with minimal symptoms rarely do. This is why your provider evaluates free testosterone, SHBG, and estradiol alongside total T, and takes symptoms and history into account. Borderline total T paired with low free T or high SHBG often represents a more significant deficiency than the raw number suggests.

Is TRT safe for my heart?

The TRAVERSE trial (2023, the largest cardiovascular safety study of TRT, 5,200 men) found no increase in major cardiovascular events with TRT compared to placebo. Some studies have actually found improved cardiovascular markers in hypogonadal men on TRT. The key caveat is hematocrit monitoring: TRT stimulates red blood cell production, which can raise clotting risk if levels rise too high. Does TRT alone help with weight loss?

TRT is not a weight loss medication, but it improves the metabolic environment for weight loss.
