How the menopause assessment works
This menopause assessment, sometimes called a perimenopause quiz, asks you to answer 11 questions across four short sections about the symptoms women notice most as hormones shift. It then factors in your age and how long the symptoms have lasted, and gives you a read on whether the pattern looks hormonal. It is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. What it does well is help you decide whether this is worth raising with a provider, which matters when so many women are told they are too young or that it is just stress.
Common signs of perimenopause and menopause
Estrogen and progesterone affect sleep, mood, temperature, memory, and the menstrual cycle, so a decline rarely shows up as one symptom on its own. It usually arrives as a cluster. These are the signs the assessment reviews:
- Hot flashes or night sweats, the symptoms most people recognize first.
- Broken sleep, often waking in the early hours and struggling to settle.
- Irregular or changing periods, heavier, lighter, closer together, or skipped.
- Brain fog, trouble finding words, or a slower mental gear.
- Mood swings or irritability that feel out of proportion.
- Anxiety or low mood, and a sense of not feeling like yourself.
Any one of these can have another cause, which is exactly why a proper evaluation matters. The assessment looks at the pattern rather than any single symptom.
Menopause is diagnosed clinically, not by one lab
This is where hormone care differs from something like testosterone, and it is worth being straight about it. There is no single blood test that confirms perimenopause. Hormone levels swing week to week during the transition, so a normal result on any given day does not rule anything out.
How it actually works: menopause is confirmed clinically, after twelve consecutive months without a period. Perimenopause is diagnosed from your symptoms and cycle changes, not from a number. Labs still help, mainly to rule out conditions that imitate menopause, such as thyroid disease, low iron, or low vitamin D. Our providers use them to complete the picture, never as the sole answer.
What happens after your menopause assessment
A high score does not mean you need hormone therapy, and it never leads straight to a prescription. It means the pattern is worth a real conversation. Our medical team reviews your history, screens for the conditions that would make hormone therapy a poor fit, and talks through the options with you before anything is prescribed.
If hormone therapy turns out to be appropriate, our providers individualize the type, dose, and route, then follow you over time. The 2022 hormone therapy position statement of The North American Menopause Society no longer sets arbitrary time limits on treatment, so duration is decided with you rather than by a calendar. You can read more on our hormone therapy program overview. For a plain-language primer on the stages, ACOG is a reliable resource.
