Spider Veins Are Not a Cosmetic Nuisance. They Are a Treatable Medical Concern.
Sclerotherapy is the gold standard treatment for spider veins and small varicose veins. A sclerosant solution is injected directly into the vein, irritating the vessel wall and causing it to swell, close, and eventually be reabsorbed by the body. The vein fades over the following weeks. It does not require surgery, anesthesia, or significant downtime. Multiple veins can be treated in a single session. Dr. Ashar performs every sclerotherapy injection at Tactus Health personally.
What Is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy involves injecting a sclerosant agent — typically polidocanol or sodium tetradecyl sulfate — directly into the target vein with a very fine needle. The sclerosant irritates the inner lining of the vessel wall, causing it to swell and stick together. Over the following weeks, the body absorbs the damaged vein and it fades from view. Blood is automatically rerouted to healthy veins.
Most patients require 2–4 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart for complete clearance of a treatment area. Individual veins can be treated alongside others in the same session. Compression stockings are worn for 24–48 hours after treatment to encourage vein closure. Most patients see significant fading by 3–6 weeks after each session.
Sclerotherapy treats the veins that are already present. It does not prevent new spider veins from forming, which are influenced by genetics, prolonged standing, and hormonal factors. Maintenance sessions once or twice a year are common for patients with ongoing new vein development.

The Vein Closes From Within.
The sclerosant solution damages the endothelial lining of the vein wall on contact. The damaged cells trigger an inflammatory cascade that causes the vein walls to stick together. Compression after treatment holds the walls in contact while the healing process completes. Over 3–6 weeks the body reabsorbs the closed vein and it becomes invisible.
This is the same mechanism whether the vein is a 1mm spider vein on the ankle or a 3mm reticular feeder vein on the thigh. Larger veins require larger sclerosant volumes and sometimes ultrasound guidance. Dr. Ashar assesses the appropriate approach at your consultation.
What Sclerotherapy Treats
Sclerotherapy is effective for veins in a specific size range. Larger veins require different interventions.
What to Expect at Your Sclerotherapy Session

Dr. Ashar N.
Dr. Ashar holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice and two national board certifications, one in family practice and one in psychiatric mental health.
She founded Tactus Health to close the gap she watched her own family fall through: symptoms that were real, labs that came back normal, and no one willing to connect the two.
She is responsible for the protocols our medical team follows, and for the training of the clinicians who deliver them. Holding both certifications is why those protocols treat hormones, mood, sleep and metabolism as one system rather than five separate appointments.

Sclerotherapy FAQ
Most patients need 2–4 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart for complete clearance of a treatment area. Patients with dense spider vein clusters or feeder veins may need more sessions. Dr. Ashar gives you an honest session estimate at your free consultation.
Most patients describe a mild burning or cramping sensation during the injection that resolves quickly. The needles used are very fine. The discomfort is generally well tolerated. No numbing is typically needed, though topical anesthesia can be applied for sensitive patients.
The veins that are treated with sclerotherapy are permanently closed. However, new spider veins can develop over time, particularly if you have a genetic predisposition, spend long hours on your feet, or have hormonal influences like pregnancy. Maintenance sessions once or twice a year are common for patients who continue to develop new veins.
Yes. Sclerotherapy has a long safety record and is the gold standard treatment for spider and reticular veins. The most common side effects are temporary: bruising, mild swelling, and a temporary brownish discoloration called hemosiderin staining, which resolves over months. Rare complications include skin ulceration and allergic reaction. Dr. Ashar reviews the full safety profile at your consultation.
Small varicose veins (under 3mm) can be treated with standard sclerotherapy. Larger or deeper varicose veins typically require ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy or procedural intervention. Dr. Ashar assesses whether your varicose veins are appropriate for sclerotherapy at your consultation and refers for advanced treatment when needed.
