What is microneedling and how does it work?

Microneedling uses a device with sterile, ultra-fine needles to create thousands of controlled micro-channels in the skin. These micro-injuries trigger the body’s natural wound-healing response: fibroblasts activate, new collagen and elastin are produced, and damaged tissue is replaced over the following weeks. The result is structural improvement in texture, tone, firmness, and scarring that surface treatments simply cannot achieve. This microneedling FAQ explains both the FDA-cleared mechanical option (SkinPen, the first FDA-cleared microneedling device) and the radiofrequency option (Pixel8 RF) available at Tactus Health.

What is the difference between SkinPen and Pixel8 RF?

SkinPen is medical-grade mechanical microneedling that stimulates collagen through controlled micro-injuries. It is the first FDA-cleared microneedling device in the US and is excellent for texture improvement, enlarged pores, and mild-to-moderate scarring. Pixel8 RF adds radiofrequency energy delivered through the needles at the moment of dermal contact. The thermal energy produces collagen contraction and remodeling that mechanical microneedling alone cannot achieve, making it the right choice for skin laxity, deeper acne scars, jawline definition, and structural concerns. Pricing reflects this difference: SkinPen starts at $350, Pixel8 RF starts at $500.

How is medical-grade microneedling different from at-home derma rollers?

Significantly different. At-home derma rollers typically use needles 0.25mm to 0.5mm long, which only reach the upper layer of skin. They cannot produce meaningful collagen stimulation in the dermis where structural changes happen. Medical-grade devices like SkinPen and Pixel8 RF use sterile, single-use cartridges with adjustable needle depths up to 2.5mm or deeper, calibrated by our medical team based on your concern and treatment zone. At-home tools also carry significant infection risk from improper sterilization. The investment in clinical microneedling is the difference between visible structural improvement and surface stimulation only.

When will I see microneedling results?

Initial brightening and surface improvement are often visible within 1 week of your first session as the skin completes its initial healing. Structural collagen remodeling continues over the following 3 to 6 months, with the most significant improvement typically visible 3 to 4 weeks after each session and accumulating across a full series. A complete 3-session series produces optimal results approximately 4 to 6 months after the first session. Patience is part of the protocol: collagen production is biological, not cosmetic.

How long do microneedling results last?

Results from a 3-session series typically last 1 to 2 years for structural improvements, depending on your skin care routine, sun exposure, and natural aging. Pixel8 RF results tend to last longer than SkinPen due to deeper collagen remodeling. Most patients benefit from a single maintenance session every 12 to 18 months to sustain results. Sun protection, quality skincare, and a stable weight all extend how long your results last. Hormone changes and significant sun exposure shorten the timeline.

What does PRP add to microneedling?

PRP, or Platelet-Rich Plasma, is derived from your own blood. A small sample is drawn, processed in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, and applied topically during your microneedling session. Growth factors in your PRP, including PDGF, TGF-beta, and VEGF, enter the open micro-channels created by the needles and amplify the collagen stimulation response. PRP enhances results and speeds healing for both SkinPen and Pixel8 RF. It costs an additional $150 per session, or $360 for three. Your provider will recommend whether PRP is right for your specific concern at your consultation.

SkinPen Microneedling

SkinPen is the first microneedling device cleared by the FDA in the United States, with a clinical track record going back to 2018. At Tactus Health, SkinPen is performed by our licensed aestheticians. Every protocol is reviewed and approved before treatment begins.

What is SkinPen and why does Tactus Health use it?

SkinPen is a medical-grade microneedling device manufactured by Crown Aesthetics. It uses sterile, single-use needle cartridges with 14 micro-needles to create controlled micro-injuries at calibrated depths. We chose SkinPen for our clinic because it was the first microneedling device to receive FDA clearance, and and offers the precision and consistency we expect from a medical-grade tool. There are many microneedling devices on the market; not all are equal, and SkinPen sets the clinical standard.

Who performs SkinPen at Tactus Health?

Our licensed aestheticians perform every SkinPen session at Tactus Health. A member of our medical team is on-site for every treatment day. You are never in a treatment room without medical-level clinical oversight available, even when the Medical Director is not the provider administering your session. This is not a franchise spa model. This is a medical practice.

How is SkinPen different from other microneedling pens?

Three key differences. First, FDA clearance: SkinPen was the first microneedling device cleared by the FDA. Many competitor devices have not gone through this process. Second, single-use sterile cartridges: every SkinPen treatment uses a fresh, sealed cartridge, which eliminates cross-contamination risk. Third, depth precision: SkinPen allows adjustment in 0.25mm increments up to 2.5mm, which means treatment depth can be precisely calibrated to your specific concern. Generic microneedling pens often have fewer depth options and inconsistent depth control across the cartridge.

Should I start with SkinPen or go straight to Pixel8 RF?

It depends on your specific concern. For mild-to-moderate texture issues, enlarged pores, early fine lines, and general skin rejuvenation, SkinPen is the right starting point and the cost difference is meaningful. For significant acne scarring, skin laxity, jawline or neck concerns, or structural changes after weight loss or pregnancy, Pixel8 RF is the correct clinical choice from the start. Some patients begin with SkinPen and graduate to Pixel8 RF as their goals evolve. Our medical team makes this recommendation at your free consultation based on what your skin actually needs, not a menu upsell.

Pixel8 RF Microneedling

Pixel8 RF combines microneedling with bipolar radiofrequency energy delivered directly into the dermis. The thermal energy contracts existing collagen and stimulates new production, producing structural remodeling that mechanical microneedling alone cannot match. This section of the microneedling FAQ explains what Pixel8 RF is, how it compares to other RF microneedling devices, and what makes it the right clinical choice for certain concerns. Pixel8 RF protocols at Tactus Health are set by Dr. Ashar, our Medical Director, and executed by our trained medical team under our Medical Director’s clinical oversight.

What is Pixel8 RF microneedling?

Pixel8 RF is an FDA-cleared radiofrequency microneedling device manufactured by Rohrer Aesthetics. It uses 25 insulated, gold-plated micro-needles that deliver controlled radiofrequency energy directly into the dermis at the moment of needle contact. The RF energy heats the dermal tissue to a precise temperature, triggering immediate collagen contraction and stimulating new collagen and elastin production over the following weeks. The combination of mechanical microneedling and RF thermal energy produces deeper remodeling than either modality alone.

How is RF microneedling different from mechanical microneedling?

Mechanical microneedling (like SkinPen) stimulates collagen through the controlled injury caused by needle penetration alone. RF microneedling adds a second mechanism: radiofrequency thermal energy delivered through the needles directly into the dermal tissue. The heat causes immediate collagen fiber contraction and triggers a deeper, more aggressive remodeling response. For laxity, deep scars, and structural concerns, RF microneedling produces results that mechanical microneedling simply cannot achieve. The trade-off is more downtime and higher cost.

How does Pixel8 RF compare to Morpheus8?

Both Pixel8 RF and Morpheus8 are FDA-cleared RF microneedling devices that work on the same biological principle. Morpheus8 (manufactured by InMode) has stronger brand recognition due to celebrity endorsement and marketing investment. Pixel8 RF (manufactured by Rohrer Aesthetics) is a clinically equivalent device, often used in physician-led practices, with similar depth ranges and energy delivery. The clinical difference between these devices is small. The much larger variable is the provider operating the device and the protocols guiding their decisions. At Tactus Health, every Pixel8 RF protocol is set by our Medical Director and executed by our trained medical team.

Who oversees Pixel8 RF protocols at Tactus Health?

RF microneedling is a clinical procedure that requires calibrated decisions about needle depth, RF energy level, and zone-by-zone protocol. These decisions affect both your results and your safety. Pixel8 RF protocols at Tactus Health are designed and overseen by our Medical Director, with treatment parameters tailored to your specific concern, skin type, and treatment zone. Our trained medical team executes these protocols at every session, with our Medical Director reviewing and approving each patient’s plan and adjusting protocol session to session based on how your skin is responding. This is the standard clinical model used in physician-led aesthetic practices, and is the differentiator between medical RF microneedling and franchise spa treatments.

Can Pixel8 RF treat areas beyond the face?

Yes. Pixel8 RF treats the neck, decolletage, abdomen, thighs, arms, and other body areas in addition to the face. It is particularly effective for stretch marks on the abdomen and thighs, skin laxity after significant weight loss, crepe skin on the neck and arms, and post-pregnancy abdominal laxity. Treatment depth and energy are calibrated differently for body areas than for the face. Pricing for body treatments varies by zone and is discussed at consultation. Most body protocols also benefit from a 3-session series for optimal remodeling.

Candidacy & Eligibility

Most adults are candidates for microneedling, including patients with darker skin tones who may not be candidates for ablative lasers. A few specific conditions require waiting or are absolute contraindications. Our medical team reviews your full history before any treatment.

Who is a good candidate for microneedling?

Good candidates include adults with acne scarring, enlarged pores, uneven texture, fine lines, skin laxity, stretch marks, or general signs of aging. We treat all six Fitzpatrick skin types, I through VI, since microneedling delivers energy below the epidermis and does not target surface melanin. Candidates should be willing to commit to a treatment series for optimal results, able to avoid significant sun exposure for 1 to 2 weeks post-treatment, and not pregnant or breastfeeding. Our medical team confirms your specific candidacy at your free consultation.

Do you treat darker skin tones?

Microneedling energy is delivered below the epidermis and does not target surface melanin. We treat all six Fitzpatrick skin types, including IV through VI. If you have been told microneedling or aesthetic procedures are not suitable for your skin tone, that concern is more applicable to lasers than to microneedling. Our medical team confirms your specific candidacy at your consultation.

Can I get microneedling during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

No. Microneedling is not performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding. While the procedure itself does not directly affect the pregnancy, topical anesthetics and the body’s healing response involve systems that should not be activated unnecessarily during pregnancy. We also do not perform Pixel8 RF on breastfeeding patients due to the RF energy involved. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, we recommend waiting until after weaning and discussing your specific timeline at consultation.

Can I get microneedling if I took Accutane (isotretinoin)?

A waiting period is required. Most clinical guidelines recommend waiting at least 6 months after completing isotretinoin (Accutane) before microneedling or other resurfacing procedures. Isotretinoin affects how skin heals, and treatments performed too soon can result in atypical scarring. Our medical team will ask about your isotretinoin history during your consultation and confirm the appropriate waiting period based on your specific course and how recently you finished treatment. For some patients, waiting 12 months provides additional safety margin.

Can I get microneedling if I have a history of keloid scarring?

This requires careful evaluation. A history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring is a relative contraindication for microneedling, since the procedure deliberately triggers a wound-healing response. Some patients with mild keloid history can safely undergo microneedling with appropriate test patches and conservative protocols. Others with significant keloid history should avoid the procedure entirely. Our medical team reviews your scarring history thoroughly at consultation and discusses whether a test patch is appropriate before committing to a full session.

Can I have Pixel8 RF if I have a pacemaker or implanted device?

Pixel8 RF is contraindicated for patients with pacemakers, defibrillators, or other implanted electrical devices, particularly in or near the treatment area. The radiofrequency energy can interfere with device function. SkinPen mechanical microneedling does not use RF energy and may be an appropriate alternative for patients with implanted devices. Always disclose any implanted medical device at your consultation. Our medical team will determine whether SkinPen, an alternative treatment, or no microneedling is the right path for your situation.

Microneedling FAQ: Patient Experience & The Visit

A microneedling session at Tactus Health takes about an hour from arrival to departure, including numbing time. Most patients return to work within 1 to 3 days depending on which treatment they receive. Published clinical research consistently supports microneedling as a low-downtime procedure with strong safety data across skin types.

Does microneedling hurt?

Both treatments are performed with topical numbing cream applied 30 minutes before the session begins. Most SkinPen patients describe the sensation as mild pressure and vibration with occasional minor pinpricks. Pixel8 RF patients feel warmth and pressure during treatment, which is manageable with proper numbing. Your provider confirms adequate numbing before proceeding and is responsive to your comfort throughout the session. If you have low tolerance for discomfort, this is a normal conversation to have at consultation. We do not begin treatment until you are properly prepared.

How long is a microneedling appointment?

Plan for about 60 to 75 minutes total. The first 30 minutes are dedicated to applying topical numbing cream and allowing it to take effect. Active treatment time is typically 30 to 45 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated and which device is used. Pixel8 RF generally takes a few minutes longer than SkinPen because of the additional energy delivery passes. Add another 5 to 10 minutes for post-treatment care instructions and scheduling your next session. Plan to arrive without makeup on the treatment area.

How many sessions do I need?

Most concerns require a series of 3 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart for optimal results. Single sessions produce visible improvement but are typically not enough to achieve significant structural change, particularly for acne scarring, deeper texture issues, and laxity. Our medical team advises on the expected number of sessions for your specific concern at your consultation. After your initial series, maintenance is typically one session every 12 to 18 months.

What is the downtime after microneedling?

SkinPen produces redness for 24 hours, similar in appearance to a moderate sunburn. Most patients return to normal activities the same day or next morning. Pixel8 RF produces redness and mild swelling for 24 to 48 hours, with most patients returning to work within 2 to 3 days. Both treatments are considered low-downtime procedures compared to ablative laser resurfacing, which can require a week or more of recovery. Plan your first session a few days before a quiet weekend if possible, so your skin can recover privately.

When can I wear makeup after microneedling?

Wait at least 24 hours after SkinPen before applying makeup, and 48 hours after Pixel8 RF. The micro-channels created by the needles remain open for several hours post-treatment, and introducing makeup particles into open channels increases the risk of irritation, breakouts, or infection. When you do return to makeup, use clean brushes and applicators and avoid heavy or pore-clogging products for the first week. Mineral-based foundations are generally well tolerated.

When can I exercise after microneedling?

Avoid strenuous exercise for the first 24 to 48 hours after your session. Heat and sweat can irritate the open micro-channels and prolong redness. Light walking is fine the same day. After 48 hours, return to your normal exercise routine. Avoid hot yoga, saunas, and steam rooms for a full week. If you are an athlete or have a non-negotiable training schedule, mention this at consultation so we can plan your session timing around it.

Can microneedling be combined with Botox or fillers?

Yes, but not on the same day. Botox and dermal fillers should be scheduled at least 2 weeks before or after a microneedling session. Microneedling needs the surrounding tissue undisturbed by recent injectable work, and the heat from Pixel8 RF in particular could affect freshly placed product. The combination works very well clinically: microneedling addresses skin texture and collagen, while Botox relaxes dynamic lines and fillers restore volume. Sequencing is what matters. Our medical team can plan your full treatment calendar at consultation.

What skincare products should I avoid after microneedling?

For the first 5 to 7 days, avoid retinoids, AHAs (glycolic, lactic acid), BHAs (salicylic acid), vitamin C serums, and benzoyl peroxide. These actives are normally beneficial but become irritating on freshly treated skin. Use gentle, fragrance-free cleansers and a barrier-supporting moisturizer during the recovery week. Mineral sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher is essential daily. After day 7, you can gradually reintroduce your usual actives, starting with low concentrations. Our medical team provides a full post-treatment skincare protocol at every session.

Cost & Payment

Tactus Health is a direct-pay practice. All pricing is transparent and disclosed before treatment begins. Series and bundle pricing offer meaningful savings over single sessions.

How much does microneedling cost at Tactus Health?

SkinPen starts at $350 per single session, or $280 per session for a course of three ($840 total). Pixel8 RF starts at $500 per single session, or $400 per session for a course of three ($1,200 total). PRP add-on is $150 per session, or $360 for three. Body area pricing is discussed at consultation since it varies by zone. The free consultation includes a full skin assessment and treatment recommendation with transparent pricing. No hidden fees.

Why is Pixel8 RF more expensive than SkinPen?

Three reasons. First, the Pixel8 RF device itself is significantly more expensive than SkinPen, which is reflected in per-session cost. Second, Pixel8 RF cartridges cost more than SkinPen cartridges per treatment. Third, Pixel8 RF requires a higher level of clinical oversight and protocol calibration, executed by our medical team under Dr. Ashar’s direct supervision, while SkinPen is performed by our licensed aestheticians within established protocols. The combination of higher equipment cost and clinical complexity accounts for the price difference. For the right concern (laxity, deep scarring, structural change), Pixel8 RF produces results that SkinPen cannot, and the investment makes sense. For texture and pore concerns, SkinPen is the appropriate clinical choice and the cost difference matters.

Do you offer financing for microneedling?

Yes. We accept Cherry, CareCredit, and AfterPay for both single sessions and series packages. Cherry typically offers 0% APR promotional plans for qualified applicants. CareCredit provides healthcare-specific financing. AfterPay splits payment into 4 interest-free installments. Application is simple and approval decisions are typically immediate. Our front desk team can help you apply during your consultation or before your first session.

Is microneedling HSA or FSA eligible?

Cosmetic microneedling is generally not HSA or FSA eligible because it is considered an elective aesthetic procedure rather than a medical necessity. However, microneedling performed to treat a specific medical condition (such as severe acne scarring documented by your provider) may qualify for HSA/FSA reimbursement with appropriate documentation. We can provide a treatment receipt with diagnostic codes when clinically appropriate, but final eligibility is determined by your HSA/FSA plan administrator. Insurance does not cover microneedling for cosmetic indications.

Microneedling FAQ: Safety & Side Effects

Both SkinPen and Pixel8 RF have established safety records when performed by qualified providers using sterile, single-use cartridges. Both devices hold FDA 510(k) clearance. Side effects are typically mild and self-resolve within a few days. Serious complications are rare but require immediate medical attention.

Contact Us Promptly If You Experience:
  • Spreading redness, warmth, or pus (signs of infection)
  • Severe swelling or pain that worsens after 48 hours
  • Persistent dark spots that do not fade within 2 weeks
  • Unexpected blistering or skin breakdown
  • Fever or systemic symptoms after treatment
Is microneedling safe?

Yes, when performed by qualified providers using sterile, single-use cartridges. Both SkinPen and Pixel8 RF have FDA clearance and well-documented safety data. Microneedling has a significantly lower risk profile than ablative laser treatments, particularly for darker skin tones. The most common side effects (redness, mild swelling, temporary sensitivity) are expected and self-resolve within 24 to 72 hours. Serious adverse events are rare and are most often associated with non-medical settings, improper sterilization, or providers without appropriate training.

What are the most common side effects?

Redness similar to a moderate sunburn is universal and resolves within 24 hours (SkinPen) or 24 to 48 hours (Pixel8 RF). Mild swelling around the treatment area is common, particularly with Pixel8 RF, and typically resolves within 48 hours. Some patients experience minor pinpoint bleeding during treatment, which is normal and stops within minutes. Skin can feel dry or slightly tight for 2 to 3 days. Less common effects include temporary breakouts as the skin clears, mild bruising in delicate areas, or transient post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in patients with darker skin tones (much less common than with lasers).

What should I avoid before microneedling?

For 7 days before your session, avoid retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, and vitamin C serums on the treatment area. Avoid waxing, threading, or chemical depilation in the treatment area for 5 days before. Skip any aesthetic treatments (Botox, fillers, lasers, peels) for 2 weeks before microneedling. Avoid sun exposure and tanning in the week before treatment. If you have a history of cold sores, our medical team may recommend antiviral medication beginning 2 days before treatment to prevent outbreak. Arrive to your appointment without makeup on the treatment area.
