How Microneedling Works
Microneedling uses a device fitted with sterile, ultra-fine needles to make thousands of tiny channels in your skin. Your skin reads them as small injuries and answers by making new collagen and elastin, so texture, tone and firmness can improve gradually in the weeks that follow.
That is different from rolling a dermaroller at home. A clinic device uses sterile, single-use needle cartridges, and the depth is set for the concern being treated. We offer two approaches, and the next section shows how they differ.

SkinPen or Pixel8 RF?
SkinPen microneedling works with the needles alone. SkinPen was the first microneedling device cleared by the FDA, for facial acne scars. It suits uneven texture, mild to moderate acne scars, enlarged pores and fine lines, and it is also used for maintenance once a series is complete.
Pixel8 RF microneedling delivers radiofrequency energy through the needles, adding heat within the skin. It is often chosen for loose skin on the lower face and jawline, more significant acne scarring and stretch marks, and it can treat body areas as well as the face.
Not sure which you need? Many people start with SkinPen and move to Pixel8 RF as their goals change, while some concerns point clearly to one or the other at the first visit. The recommendation is made at your free consultation, once your skin has been looked at.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP), prepared from a small sample of your own blood, can be added to either treatment and applied to the skin during your session.
Is Microneedling Right for You?
It suits adults who want gradual, non-surgical change in how their skin looks and feels, and who can commit to a short series and keep out of strong sun for 1 to 2 weeks afterward. These are the concerns it is used for most.
- Acne scars
- Enlarged pores
- Rough or uneven texture
- Fine lines and early wrinkles
- Dark marks left after breakouts
- Loose skin on the lower face and jawline
- Stretch marks
When to wait or ask first
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- An active skin infection, inflammation or open lesions in the area
- Isotretinoin (Accutane) in the past 6 months
- A history of keloid scarring
- A pacemaker or implanted electrical device near the area (Pixel8 RF)
- Active cold sores in the area
- Significant active acne in the area
Pigment changes can happen with deeper skin tones, so your skin and history are reviewed before your first session. Mention anything on this list at your consultation, along with any medicines you take.

Microneedling FAQs
More in our full microneedling FAQ, or call (678) 892-9230
Should I start with SkinPen or Pixel8 RF?
It depends on your concern. For mild to moderate texture, enlarged pores and early fine lines, SkinPen is usually the starting point, and it is the lower-priced of the two. For more significant acne scarring or loose skin, Pixel8 RF is often recommended from the start. Some people begin with SkinPen and move to Pixel8 RF later.
Does microneedling hurt?
Numbing cream is applied 30 minutes before either treatment. With SkinPen, most people feel mild pressure and vibration. With Pixel8 RF, expect warmth and pressure, and your comfort is checked before treatment begins.
How many sessions will I need?
Most concerns call for a series of 3 sessions, 4 to 6 weeks apart. Some people notice a change after one session, but acne scarring and loose skin usually need several for collagen to rebuild. Your plan is set at your consultation.
Can microneedling treat darker skin tones?
It can. Deeper skin tones do carry some risk of pigment change, which is why your provider reviews your skin and your history and sets the plan before your first session.
What does PRP add?
PRP is platelet-rich plasma, prepared from a small sample of your own blood and applied to the skin during SkinPen or Pixel8 RF. It is optional, and your consultation covers whether it suits you, its possible benefits and its risks.
Can microneedling be combined with other treatments?
Microneedling is often paired with a VI Peel series when texture and dark marks are both a concern. Botox is not done on the same day as microneedling, and your provider can advise on timing.
Can microneedling treat the body?
Pixel8 RF can. Body areas include the abdomen, upper arms, knees, elbows and the front or back of the upper legs, each priced by area on our RF microneedling page. SkinPen is used on the face.
