Laser Hair Removal FAQ
Most areas need 6 to 8 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Hair grows in cycles, and the laser only affects hair in its active growth phase, called anagen. Each session treats whichever share of the area is actively growing at that time, which is why the course is spread out rather than delivered in one visit. Facial areas driven by hormones, such as the chin and upper lip, sometimes need additional sessions or annual maintenance. Your practitioner sets expectations at your consultation.
The accurate term is permanent hair reduction. After a completed course, the treated area grows back far less hair, and what does return is usually finer and lighter. Most patients need nothing further or one touch-up a year. Anyone promising total permanent removal of every hair is overstating what the technology does.
The diode laser can be used across a wide range of skin tones when the settings are matched to the individual. This is the main advance over older systems, which struggled to separate hair pigment from skin pigment on deeper complexions. Your practitioner confirms your candidacy at the consultation.
Most patients describe it as a rubber band snap followed by a cooling burst. Cooling is built into the device. Sensitive areas such as the upper lip and bikini line are felt more than the legs or arms. Sessions are short enough that most patients tolerate them without numbing.
Usually mild short-term redness and warmth for a few hours. Most people return to normal activity right away. Avoid sun for 48 hours and heat exposure for 24 hours.
Yes. Shaving removes hair at the surface and leaves the root in place, which is what the next session needs. Waxing, threading and plucking remove the root and make the following session less effective.
Not on a fresh tan or sunburn. Recent sun exposure and self-tanner both change how the skin responds. Your practitioner will tell you when it is appropriate to treat.
Usually not. The laser finds hair by its pigment, and these hair colors do not carry enough of it. Electrolysis is the option that works regardless of hair color, and we would rather point you there than take payment for a course unlikely to help.
Laser reduces the visible hair, which is often what patients want most. It does not address the hormonal cause. Patients with PCOS commonly need more sessions and periodic maintenance, because the underlying driver keeps prompting new growth. Evaluating the cause is a separate conversation, and one we can have.
You have not lost your progress. Hair returns on its own cycle, so a delayed session still treats whatever is actively growing when you come in. Getting back on the 4 to 6 week schedule is what matters.
