Men’s skin is approximately 25% thicker than women’s skin and produces significantly more sebum. Standard facial protocols are not calibrated for this. A double cleanse is necessary to actually penetrate the sebum and product layer. Extractions need to go deeper along the jaw and neck, where shaving pushes debris and keratin into follicles.
Ingrown hairs are a structural issue caused by the follicle growing back under the skin after a close shave. Treating them requires a different approach than treating a standard blackhead: manual release, follicle-softening preparation, and post-treatment antibacterial serum to prevent secondary infection.

For chronic ingrown hairs, monthly facials progressively reduce their frequency as follicle health improves with consistent treatment.
Do not shave on the day of your facial. Shaving the day before is ideal, as it gives the skin surface 24 hours to settle while leaving the beard short enough for the aesthetician to work effectively. Shaving immediately before a facial creates micro-irritation that can make extraction less comfortable and increases post-treatment redness. Shaving is fine 24-48 hours after your facial once the skin has fully settled.
Monthly is the standard recommendation. Men produce sebum faster than women, which means pore congestion rebuilds relatively quickly. Monthly sessions keep this managed while progressively improving skin clarity, ingrown hair frequency, and overall skin health over time.
