Masseter Botox in Sugar Hill, GA
When your jaw looks square from clenching.
Botox that relaxes the masseter so the jaw can slim over time.

Why a Jaw Can Look Square
The masseter is the thick chewing muscle at the back corner of your jaw. Like any muscle that works hard, it can grow. Clenching, grinding and constant gum chewing all build it up, and some people are simply born with a larger one. A wide, square lower face is the most common reason people ask about treating it.
Not every full jaw is muscle. Swelling near the angle of the jaw can come from the parotid salivary gland, which is why treatment starts with an exam of the jaw and not with a needle.
How Masseter Botox Works
Botox relaxes the masseter so it works less, and a muscle that works less slowly gets smaller. That is a different timeline from lines on the forehead, which soften within 3 to 7 days. The jaw changes over weeks, and in studies the biggest drop in muscle strength came at about 10 to 12 weeks. The effect usually lasts about 3 to 4 months, and many people repeat it as it fades.
BOTOX Cosmetic is FDA-approved for frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead lines and neck bands. The masseter is not on that list, so jaw treatment is an off-label use, decided with you at your consultation. Every area we treat is listed on our Botox page.

Clenching, Grinding and TMJ
Many people who ask about masseter Botox also clench or grind, and some have jaw pain. It is fair to want one treatment for both, so here is the straight answer.
According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, Botox is FDA-approved for some medical conditions, such as migraines, but not for TMJ disorders. Studies of it for jaw joint and muscle pain have had mixed results, and it is unclear whether it relieves those symptoms.
So we offer masseter Botox as a cosmetic treatment for the shape of your jaw. A relaxed muscle may clench less hard, but we do not treat it as a cure for jaw pain.
See a dentist or doctor first if
Your jaw hurts, locks or will not open fully, the pain spreads to your face or neck, or you notice ringing in your ears, hearing loss or dizziness. A jaw that clicks without pain is common and usually not a worry.

Is Masseter Botox Right for You?
It suits a lower face that looks wide because the muscle itself is large. You may notice one or more of these.
- A jaw that looks wide or square at the angle
- A muscle you can feel bulge when you clench
- A habit of clenching or grinding that has built the muscle up
If the fullness is fat under the chin, ask about fat-dissolving injections. If the jawline is softening because skin is loosening, see our skin laxity options. A dimpled, pebbly chin is its own treatment, Botox for chin dimpling, and bands down the neck are covered on Botox for neck bands.
When to wait
We do not treat during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with an infection where the injections would go, or with an allergy to any botulinum toxin. Some neuromuscular conditions need assessment first.
Bring a list of your medicines and health conditions to your consultation.
What Happens at Your Visit
-
Jaw exam and consultation
Your provider feels the muscle while you clench, asks about grinding, jaw pain and your medical history, and explains what Botox can and cannot change. If something other than muscle could explain the fullness, you hear that before any treatment.
-
Treatment
A few injections into the muscle on each side with a very fine needle. The injections take about 15 to 20 minutes.
-
Your 2-week follow-up
A free visit to check how chewing and your smile feel. The slimming itself takes longer to show, so this visit also plans when to judge the full result.

Masseter Botox FAQs
Is masseter Botox FDA-approved?
No. BOTOX Cosmetic is FDA-approved for frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead lines and neck bands. Treating the masseter is an off-label use, so whether it suits you, and the dose, are decided with you at your consultation.
When will my jaw look slimmer?
Gradually, over weeks rather than days. The change comes from the muscle getting smaller once it is relaxed, and in studies the biggest drop in muscle strength came at about 10 to 12 weeks.
Will it change how I chew or smile?
Chewing tough food can feel weaker for a while as the muscle relaxes. Less often, people notice a change in their smile, an uneven look, or a small bulge when they clench. Doses are set for your face, and your free 2-week follow-up is the time to raise anything that feels off.
Can Botox treat TMJ or teeth grinding?
Botox is not FDA-approved for TMJ disorders, and the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research says results in studies have been mixed. We offer masseter Botox as a cosmetic treatment. For jaw pain, a jaw that locks, or grinding that wears your teeth, see your dentist or doctor.
How many units does the masseter take?
At our clinic it is typically 40 to 60 units for both sides, as the table above shows. Your units are set at your consultation, because muscle size differs a lot from person to person.
How often will I need treatment?
The effect usually lasts about 3 to 4 months. Many people repeat treatment as it wears off, and your provider reviews the dose at each visit.
